When the whaling activity had it's apogee, the island of São Miguel exported to Germany and Japan more tons of oil than the rest of the other islands. This historic fact, confirmed by statistics and by the accounts of the whalers, themselves, as well as the factories, is demonstrative of the richness of the waters around the island.

The Sperm Whale is often sighted by the new whalers and, other cetaceans are in big number and easily sighted, very near the cost!
Like for example, the big Blue Whale and the Risso's Dolphin.
The waters around the island are very deep. This condition permits the sperm whale to come very near the shore, usually in big social groups. Delivered to themselves, the Whales spend a lot of time in the surface, socializing, and sometimes they can approach the boats.

The dolphins abound: They make the delight of the New Whalers with their cheerful fun and curiosity. The Botlenose Dolphin, the Common Dolphin, the Stripped Dolphin, the Spotted Dolphin are sometimes observed all in the same day. Sharks,turtles and sea birds are also observed in big numbers. Nevertheless, FUTURISMO whale watching -, follows the strict approximation rules, preserving distances and keeping noise levels within the norms.

Our behaviour and our sensibility has developing a program to evaluate the impact of the vessels on the observation of Whales and Dolphins. Attitude already recognized as good collaboration between the scientific community and the Whale Watching operators.
